Celebrating my birthday in Anna’s house

Good morning! In last month’s post we saw the exterior of Anna’s house. And now Anna wants to invite you inside to celebrate my birthday today (and have some cake)! ^_^

First, a comfy living room / kitchen (as almost always, click to view larger). This is where Café Memoria days start, where Anna and Elena spend time having breakfast before work. And, on their days off, lunch, dinner, as well as watching a movie or documentaries together. BTW, that red thing next to the flat-screen is not an ashtray, it’s a fragrant candle! This is a non-smoking household. Care to have some bread from the basket?

Now, let’s go to Anna’s room! Decided to go with a pink and white scheme. Anna loves nature, so there’s a few potted plants and pictures of such. I think the woody texture of the furniture makes it more nature-y, while keeping it somewhat modern. And of course, Anna bought a laptop with the money she makes at Café Memoria. It’s an, uh, Acer laptop powered with a Core i3 + Windows 10! She’s not a gamer, anyway; she mostly uses it for schoolwork.

What do you guys think of these interior BGs? I think my BG artist did a marvelous job!

Backgrounds aside, this month has been somewhat plagued with computer problems. Some of them include a minor malware infection, to an automatic update breaking some of my software. Fortunately it wasn’t that bad thanks to scans and backups, but it did take hours to fix.

Despite the above setbacks, I tried my best to get stuff done! Among them include planning food artworks. Unlike the first Café Memoria, CMD will not be using any food stock photos, but instead will be drawn (still debating if I should hire a separate artist for this).

I’m also in the process of planning out event CG artwork. Of course this will be done by my character artist. How does one plan out event artwork anyway? I have quite a bit of CGs, and I can only gather so much references. Maybe the BG art will help a bit, for the artist to get an idea of the environment? For example, there is a scene where Ryne and Anna are studying in the latter’s room – I’m hoping the BGs will make doing CG art less complicated!

You know, I kind of regret not commissioning an artwork of Anna presenting a birthday cake. Though, at the same time it’s probably best if given from the thoughts of others, and not expecting / asking for anything. Perhaps one of the most important things I learned in my life is “it’s the thought that counts.”

Let’s go to Anna’s house

Let me introduce you to Café Memoria Deux’s BG artist – Lavinia, aka GlassHeart / Selavi. I think she’s done a wonderful job so far! Look forward to seeing her work in this project. Do check out her portfolio, she’s pretty amazing 🙂

Elena (Anna’s mother) makes a good chunk of money by running the cafe, so the house is a little on the high-end side, being a little large and double-story. And of course, there’s lots of plants / flowers, with several specific varieties of flower. I gave it some thought as to which ones to put around her house (as well as the other girls’ homes). In the end, the flower meanings of irises and lavender fit Anna’s personality very well and how she develops in the story. I’ll leave out the meaning of those flowers here as it’s kind of spoiler-ish.

(Okay, a bit of a confession, I’ve been playing this browser game titled “Flower Knight Girl” the past several months, and it made me a bit of a, uh, flower maniac. ^_^; )

As for rest of the project, I’ve been kicking up the pace and working on the system and GUI, mostly the food selection and feedback screens. It’s mostly done and working properly, although I’m having issues with dissolve / fade transitions – for some reason side images are transitioning twice between interactions. And calling a screen with transition gives errors, despite the Ren’Py documentation saying you can. >.>

That should be it. Next post, hopefully new sprite artwork!

Progress, Editing, and Birthday!

Good day everyone! Okay, I know you’re probably expecting new sprite artworks of Tristina (or Aurelia or Julia), but she’s still being worked on as of this post. I hope to post her sometime next month though! In the meantime, here’s a sample CMD screenshot:

Been working on the GUI a bit. It should be mostly the same from the previous Café Memoria, with a few new tweaks thanks to Ren’Py 6.99.11’s new GUI system (can’t wait for Ren’Py 7!). Of course, there are several things from CM1’s  GUI that could use a makeover and incorporate it into CMD. Like the Options / Preferences screen – looking back at that I think it could use a bit more effort.

How do the sprites look in the screenshot, btw? 🙂

Also, editing work is mostly complete. All that’s left now is to give it one more round of reading through and find anything needing refining. Also during that process determine what backgrounds I’ll need. Speaking of which, I’m in the process of gathering references for BGs, which… might take a while. Especially the ones involving interior design, not that great at it XD

Yeah, I know I posted this on my birthday today. But I just had to! ^.^ Not really fond of the thought of getting older, but ah well. Time to make the most of this day with friends and family, and of course progress~

And, let’s not neglect the story! It’s currently being looked over by my editor, with several documents already edited. Pretty interesting how I read over the script before sending it to be edited, and it looked fine to me. But reading my editor’s comments opened my eyes on how the script can be improved. Ahaha, I must admit, English wasn’t my strongest subject during my school years. But yeah, I’ve learned quite a bit from my editor.

With sprite artworks and editing work being done, perhaps it’s time to consider background artworks for the game. I’ve already started planning which BGs I need, maybe something in the style of the original Café Memoria. Oh, the GUI needs some planning, too.

Hope you’re all doing well, because CMD is progressing very well! I present you artwork of Anna, in her various outfits. 🙂

Anna's outfitsClick to view larger, artwork by Ezri. What do you guys think of Anna and her outfits? I know, right? Can’t wait to go to the beach with her, right? Mikaela is currently being worked on as I’m writing this post, and will be posted in the next update (along with other characters).

As for the story, it’s going well! I’m spending time adding suggestions from the critique, self-editing / proofreading. It’s so tempting to rush through it, but I’m taking it a step at a time. That means going through the script sequentially, day-by-day, not jumping around as that’ll mess me up. CMD is fairly big, but still manageable.

Oh, did I say I’m doing grave shift again? Yes, that means more irregularities in my schedule. I’ll still do my best to work on the project, fighting fatigue and whatnot. I don’t know how long it’ll last, but I hope they’ll hire someone soon, and not take six months to do so, just like last time. Because really, mixing grave and day shift in my schedule really kills me x_x

It’s been years since releasing my previous VN, Final Week. Café Memoria helped me gain experience in VN creation, as my other project, Memoria, has stalled indefinitely. I have learned quite a bit in the creation of Café Memoria – learning to work with others, learning to be patient with them, overcoming many challenges and unforeseen problems, and learning to have fun doing something you enjoy. 🙂

Yes, this project was a joy to work on. I’ve met so many people helping me with this project: editors, the artist, the voice actresses, and whatnot. They helped make this project possible. And because of the positive experience gained I’m likely to hire them again for future projects.

Now that’s released, I think I’m going to take it a step further in future projects. Fundraise my next project? Go commercial? It’s possible! I’m going to take it a bit at a time in these next projects, so that when Memoria comes out of hiatus I have the experience necessary to finish it (keep in mind – Memoria is a pretty large project).

Cafe Memoria – Route Previews

Been a month since I released the Cafe Memoria demo! I want to say thank you to everyone who played it and gave feedback. Your suggestions will be considered, they mean lots to me. 🙂

If you haven’t already, you can download the demo here.

Progress on the full version is going nicely. All routes have been programmed in. So, what’s next? I’m planning on creating a small, yet entertaining, promo video, showcasing all the characters along with their voice actresses. But most importantly is post-processing the voice files and putting them in the game. That’s… going to be a challenge. I can safely say I have well over 600+ .wav files, including retakes.

Anna, Mikaela, and Ryne’s voices are already done. Waiting for Tristina, Aurelia, and Julia’s voices, which are almost done.

Also planning on updating the engine from Ren’Py 6.17 to 6.18.  I really dig adjusting voice volume on a per-character basis. But that’s low priority as of now.

After months of hard work, the Cafe Memoria demo is now playable! Thanks to those who helped me get to this point.

Demo version 0.1 contains:

  • Just two routes: Anna and Mikaela
  • No voice acting for now, but will be in future versions (still recording / post-processing!)
