Happy PixaelSoft / Project Memoria 10th Anniversary!

Finally, PixælSoft / Project Memoria has hit 10 years since its opening on September 27, 2009! To be honest, I didn’t think I would go on for this long. Along the way, I met a wide variety of people who helped me with my visual novel projects. There were some bumps on the road, but for the most part it’s a pleasure to work with them, allowing me to push forward and resulted in the completion of two projects, plus a demo release.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but have I been posting blog entries in consecutive months since opening? I’m… not even sure how I got the energy to do something like that for 10 years. o_O Maybe it’s the strong motivation to make sure the projects see completion? I should take a month off from projects sometime.

By the way, I’d like to share a special 10th Anniversary message (and a special CG 😉 )

Julia in a wedding dress

Click here to read my message (and view the full-sized CG)! I wrote a reflection on how I got interested in VNs, and my inspirations in opening PixælSoft / Project Memoria. You know, back in my college days when I created a few VNs for final projects. Then there’s my scrapped RPG project, taking characters from that and placing them in VN projects. Yeah, those were the days – very fond memories.

As for the CG, it was done by Arctic Fox (her twitter)! She has done a marvelous job in drawing Julia in a wedding dress. Julia wants to spread her love for your support of this studio and my projects for so many years!

So, what’s after this? Well, I’ll continue to work on Café Memoria Deux and hope to release the full version. Then there’s my older projects – reworking them is always a possibility. This includes as early as my first VN “Dating Sim”, to my more recent one including, “All I Want for Christmas is a Girlfriend”. Of course, I have VN ideas floating around that I might want to bring to life someday.

Thanks so much for your support for all these years, and hope you folks stick around. Happy Anniversary, and here’s to another 10 years!

Café Memoria Deux site up! Demo release date!

Hey folks! It took a while, but I finally opened the “Café Memoria Deux” site! ^_^

Café Memoria Deux

Click on the banner above to visit. Do check out the various pages, and learn more about the game and its story and characters, and even view some screenshots. 🙂 Note that I don’t have chara art of Ryne just yet, he’s still being worked on as of this post. Also, if you haven’t seen it there already, mark your calendars: I’ll be releasing the demo next month, which is Friday, July 26, 2019. In the meantime, I’ll be cleaning up the game a bit so the code’s all nice and tidy for release. I hope this hypes you all up!

If you folks want to take a look, I’ve also took the time to redesign the PixælSoft site. The old layout was more of a quick and dirty version with not much effort put into it (I kind of rushed it while simultaneously working on the first Café Memoria site). I’m not sure what I was thinking about going for a ~750px wide layout (which is too narrow for my needs)… I hope it looks much nicer!

Check out the updated site here!

While I’ve tested them as much as possible, do let me know if anything’s broken with the sites (broken links/images, layout, etc.).

If everything goes to plan, I will be releasing the CMD’s demo on said above date. Look to it!

Julia’s birthday present

What’s this?! Another birthday post? Because Julia’s birthday is coming up (Feb 27), I’ll be sharing more title artwork of her 🙂

Title Sample - Julia

“Welcome to Café Memoria! How may I serve you today?”

Click to view larger; what do you guys think? I really like her inviting pose as she brings you to your table. You can tell from her expression that she really loves her job! She comes in to work every day with a lovely and bright smile on her face. Her job coincides with her love for cooking, and is likely to consider making a career in the restaurant business.

As usual, a progress report on the project! More artworks are being worked on, and of course more revisions to the script. As for progress on the demo, script-wise I just finished one of Anna’s hangout days, and Mikaela’s day will be worked on soon. Otherwise, it’s just a matter of adding in the title and food artworks, making finishing touches, and whatnot.

…shoot, I kinda neglected the site for the project! I checked my files for it and last modified… July 2017. Better haul rear and update it >.<

More artworks and stuff in the coming months. Thanks for your patience! Be sure to wish Julia happy birthday ^.^

Julia’s Love

It took months, but Julia’s sprite artwork is now complete! You can tell how happy she is, all colored up and ready to serve you!Julia's outfits

Click to view larger. Julia is noticeably shorter compared to the other girls – well she is the shortest of the five girls – but that doesn’t stop her from trying to give you great service! And also a small girl with a big talent for cooking. She’s in her school’s cooking club and people often ask her for help with cooking, including the club president 😉 And don’t you love how her glasses give her character? She’s not the strict student council president / class president type, but more of a sweetheart to her friends and everyone around her – well, maybe not as much as Aurelia but she makes a great (girl)friend nonetheless!

What do you guys think of her? Let me know!

In addition, I’d like to say all BG art for the demo is done; might post some more of them in the coming months. As for food artwork recruiting, still working on it! I will post an update on Twitter and here when I’m ready. Don’t want to end up commissioning artworks I won’t eventually need, and breaking the budget. Was kind of tempted to rush in and start recruiting, but going through the checklist and script already revealed that several are nothing more than just taking up space >_<

We’re getting there, right? I can’t wait to see the rest of the characters done! I really would love to see Elena done next. Because I know we would love to see an attractive business owner, and uh, mother. Ahaha. ^_^

Enjoy, and see you next post!

Julia in July… not really

Hey folks! Hope you’re all staying cool this summer (or at least to those living in the northern hemisphere!). Here’s what I’m up to lately with CMD:

Tristina and Aurelia screenshot

Just playing around with the GUI, and testing out Tristina and Aurelia’s sprites. Let me know how it looks, I’d like feedback if anything can be improved! In regards to coding, I’m having this weird issue with side images – here’s a snippet of Ren’py code:

show tristina irritated at cu_center with dissolve

"And just like that, Tristina shows up."
t "What are you looking at?"
#"She looks to the side, and sees..."

show aurelia crazy at cu_right with dissolve

    "Oh great, it's Aurelia."
u "Ahahaha, who wants to play with Aurelia? Don't run away now~!"

“t” is Tristina’s character; “u” is Aurelia. When line 4 transitions to line 7, Tristina’s side image transitions out with a dissolve, even though I have no exit transition defined for side images. Here’s the weird part – uncomment line 5, and it’ll work as intended, Tristina’s side image disappears with no transition. I’ve been banging my head against the wall for hours the other night. I did try upgrading my Ren’Py but it didn’t help. Sounds confusing? Don’t worry about it 😉

There’s a chance I’ll be doing some recruiting next month. I’ve been spending the last month planning it somewhat extensively (okay, maybe the past several months). Part of the reason I’ve been holding it off for a while is that it can eat up a fairly large part of my budget. I had to prune parts of the project without breaking the story. I’m deciding, will this work out without so-and-so? Can it be substituted with this and still work out? I’ve been feeling a little hesitant as there’s quite a bit of risk to it and requires extensive planning – but hey the project has to progress eventually, gotta take the risk.

Lastly, Julia’s sprite is currently in the works. I know this post isn’t really about her, but I just had to give it a title relating to July and Julia, since they look and sound similar in a way. Her birthday isn’t in July, though; it’s in February 😉

Sooo, yeah. This month’s been pretty hectic, both project-wise, and at work. Look forward to the next post!

A Very Hot CMD Summer

Last week was extremely hot (like 100+F)! It’s cooled down a bit by now, but I think that’s an indication of long, long days of extreme heat in the following weeks x_x It’s okay, though, let’s cool off with full-body artworks of some more CMD girls!

Aurelia's OutfitsJulia's Outfits

Click to view larger. What do you think of them and their outfits? Aurelia still likes getting into others’ personal space, so if she does so in her swimsuit… yeah. She’s still her flirtatious and airheaded self, as always. 🙂 As for Julia, she’s still working hard at the café with Aurelia and the other girls, and enjoying her summer vacation with her friends. I think they came out very lovely. 🙂

Artwork of Elena, Anna’s mother, is currently being worked on. From the progress I’ve seen, she just looks… stunning. Something to look for next month!

BTW, I’m preparing a recruitment post for a script editor. I think I’ve self-edited the script so many times already, that the project needs to go forward and have another set of eyes look at it. Should be ready within a week or two, from the time of this blog post (tentative). Also possibly coming soon: recruiting a background artist.

Edit: 2016/06/28 – Something came up that will delay  progress of CMD quite a bit. I’ll try to have a blog post this Friday explaining the details.

Edit: 2016/06/29 – I guess I must let it out here, but due to some issues, Ezri, my artist, will be unable to work on CMD. It’s unfortunate as I’d like to keep her because she worked on the first Café Memoria. But I must respect her position, and let her go.

So, I’m planning to hire a new artist. I’m hoping have a post up this Friday with details, so stay alert!

Stay cool this summer, folks!

Café Memoria Released!

It’s been a long road, and now Café Memoria is released, for your PC, Mac, or Linux machine! 😀

Download Now!

  • Version 1.0
  • Release Date: 2015/06/26
  • Size: 135 MB

It’s been years since releasing my previous VN, Final Week. Café Memoria helped me gain experience in VN creation, as my other project, Memoria, has stalled indefinitely. I have learned quite a bit in the creation of Café Memoria – learning to work with others, learning to be patient with them, overcoming many challenges and unforeseen problems, and learning to have fun doing something you enjoy. 🙂

Yes, this project was a joy to work on. I’ve met so many people helping me with this project: editors, the artist, the voice actresses, and whatnot. They helped make this project possible. And because of the positive experience gained I’m likely to hire them again for future projects.

Now that’s released, I think I’m going to take it a step further in future projects. Fundraise my next project? Go commercial? It’s possible! I’m going to take it a bit at a time in these next projects, so that when Memoria comes out of hiatus I have the experience necessary to finish it (keep in mind – Memoria is a pretty large project).

Let me know what you think of Café Memoria in the comments. Who’s your favorite character? Any constructive criticism? Thanks again for following me, hope you guys stick around for next projects!

Best wishes and have fun!

Cafe Memoria – Route Previews

Tags: , , , , , , ,

Been a month since I released the Cafe Memoria demo! I want to say thank you to everyone who played it and gave feedback. Your suggestions will be considered, they mean lots to me. 🙂

If you haven’t already, you can download the demo here.

Progress on the full version is going nicely. All routes have been programmed in. So, what’s next? I’m planning on creating a small, yet entertaining, promo video, showcasing all the characters along with their voice actresses. But most importantly is post-processing the voice files and putting them in the game. That’s… going to be a challenge. I can safely say I have well over 600+ .wav files, including retakes.

Anna, Mikaela, and Ryne’s voices are already done. Waiting for Tristina, Aurelia, and Julia’s voices, which are almost done.

Also planning on updating the engine from Ren’Py 6.17 to 6.18.  I really dig adjusting voice volume on a per-character basis. But that’s low priority as of now.

And, some previews of the other routes (Tristina / Julia)…

Funny Tristina

Anna telling Julia not to do stuff

Progress Estimates

  • Script – 100%
  • Character art – 100%
  • Music – 95% (need to tweak stuff)
  • Programming – ~75% (testing, and need to add in the voices)
  • Voices – ~50% (waiting on the last bits of recordings, as well as post-processing)

Enjoy!

  • Mikaela Kier – Skyler Davenport

Cafe Memoria - Julia and Tristina

Meet some more of your lovely waitresses of Cafe Memoria! And the male protagonist. Art is by Ezri, thanks to her again!

Cafe Memoria - Tristina Hamilton

Tristina Hamilton

Tristina decided to work at the restaurant because she thinks they’re cosplaying, although Anna insists they’re not. Despite this, she has a hard time with males and treats them differently compared to females.

Cafe Memoria - Julia Sakuraba

Julia Sakuraba

Despite having a talent for cooking, Julia opted to be a waitress in hopes of improving her relationships with her friends, including Anna. She’s very modest and polite, and downplays any accomplishments she’s done.

Cafe Memoria - Ryne Reyes

Ryne Reyes

Ryne is the main male protagonist who visits Café Memoria simply out of curiosity. Described as calm and friendly by his friends, he likes to help his friends with the problems they face.

And some screenshots:

Happy Anna!

Showing off the various expressions

Updated options screen

Note for the screenshot just above: background is only a placeholder until I get title art done.

Progress Estimates

  • Script – 100%
  • Character art – ~80% (working on title screen)
  • Music – 95% (need to tweak stuff)
  • Programming – 10% (programming in the script / artworks)
  • Voices – 0%

The release date will have to be pushed to Fall 2014. Yeah, I keep pushing it back, but I need more time to work on this! In the meantime, hope you enjoy what you see!
