Remember that time a waitress greeted you with a lovely smile, with a sweet-sounding “hello” as you walk through the door? How about the time she made you smile as she put that warm cup of coffee on your table? What about the time she accidentally got your order wrong, and went out of her way to fix it for you? Let’s also not forget the times you’ve watched her have to put up with rude and unruly guests – keeping a calm demeanor in the face of adversity.

Let’s also not forget that she’s also there to provide us great service, even during times like these. Honoring all waitstaff. Happy Café Memoria Day! To celebrate, here’s some chibis ^_^

Happy Café Memoria Day 2020 - Mikaela and Aurelia

Mikaela and Aurelia (and the other waitresses) feel appreciated that their hard work is being noticed! Because you know, working in the food industry can feel like a thankless job. I can certainly say they can make your days better – I’m reminded of a time when I was having a pretty bad day and just went out by myself to grab a bite. As I left, a server told me, “have a good day!”

We might think that those four simple words are empty, and are only saying that just because it’s their job. But stop for a moment and think – they could be sincere in those words. I felt the sincerity in the server and responded with, “thanks, you too.” I dunno, it just felt like all the bitterness I had that day just faded away.

I must admit, waitstaff have to be some of the toughest-minded people out there. I mean, the pressure of serving multiple customers at once, communicating with their team, and of course dealing with the bad customers that pop up. And at the same time, providing you with great service. They deserve recognition in what they do.

Before I forget, these chibis were done by Arctic Fox (her twitter)! Remember the 10th anniversary CG? Yes, that’s the same artist. She’s done a wonderful job in these cute chibis of Mikaela and Aurelia ^_^

Remember to tip your server if you thought he/she did a great job!

Mikaela keeping calm during these times

Another month has passed, and that means an update! Here’s some new artwork, that is, a chibi of Mikaela! I hope you all are staying well and safe =)

She might not want to work, but Mikaela’s helping to keep Café Memoria open, along with the other waitresses. Like with Anna, Mikaela will react differently depending on how you rate her service – do you think she deserves to be rated terribly because she can’t keep her temper in check? Or she’s just misunderstood, and is just putting forth the effort into her job?

  • Bad: Angry b/c you rated her terribly, but it’s justified as she couldn’t keep her cool ò_ó
  • Mediocre: Trying not to blow up at you ù_ú
  • Neutral: She did alright, better than her flipping out on you ō_ō
  • Good: She’s such a model waitress >=)
  • Best: Are you trying to win her over? (submissive looking smile)

Note that she has an anger vein thing going on for her bad and mediocre expressions, but the cropping cut it off =P

I probably should update the game and test drive the rating system with the chibis I have now. And probably give the game’s engine an update (Ren’Py 7.0 to 7.3.5). Because I’ve been out of work for at least a month now (due to the virus), I’ve spent the time developing ideas for new VNs (possibly including CMD side projects). But the shutdown also means budgeting accordingly, meaning I can’t hire new team members at the moment. But… I’ll try my best. 🙂

Cafe Memoria Deux demo released!

Café Memoria Deux

It’s been several years since I started this project. But the Café Memoria Deux demo is now playable! Thanks to those who helped me get to this point. It’s been a wild ride putting this together!

Demo version 0.1 contains:

  • A focus on the characters Anna and Mikaela
  • All characters make a return from prequel + two new characters
  • A return of the food selections + rating system from the first Café Memoria
  • Note there’s no sprite art of the protagonist, Ryne, just yet, as he’s still being worked on as of this post.
  • As someone pointed out in the comments of previous post, no, there’s no voice acting. But depending on how things go, there might be in future versions!

Hey folks! It took a while, but I finally opened the “Café Memoria Deux” site! ^_^

Do check out the various pages, and learn more about the game and its story and characters, and even view some screenshots. 🙂 Note that I don’t have chara art of Ryne just yet, he’s still being worked on as of this post. Also, if you haven’t seen it there already, mark your calendars: I’ll be releasing the demo next month, which is Friday, July 26, 2019. In the meantime, I’ll be cleaning up the game a bit so the code’s all nice and tidy for release. I hope this hypes you all up!

If you folks want to take a look, I’ve also took the time to redesign the PixælSoft site. The old layout was more of a quick and dirty version with not much effort put into it (I kind of rushed it while simultaneously working on the first Café Memoria site). I’m not sure what I was thinking about going for a ~750px wide layout (which is too narrow for my needs)… I hope it looks much nicer!

While I’ve tested them as much as possible, do let me know if anything’s broken with the sites (broken links/images, layout, etc.).

If everything goes to plan, I will be releasing the CMD’s demo on said above date. Look to it!

Mikaela’s spring greens

Hello once again, folks! Today, I’ll be sharing some title artwork of Mikaela! Sorry, no birthday wishes for her (unlike the past two months), as her b-day is on December. (Please Mikaela, don’t go all tsun-tsun on me!)

Of course, click to view larger; she’s showing quite a bit of personality here! She has the potential to be a nice waitress, right? But she’s the type to lose patience easily, especially when it comes to rude customers, or when they take slow to order and are indecisive. In fact, working in the café is kind of a test for her. She can act tsundere all she wants towards her friends, but Elena is there to keep her in check, making sure she doesn’t blow up at the guests.

Alright, I think since the project is progressing very nicely the past months, it might be safe to say that a demo will be released in the coming months (I’m thinking around the summer). I’ve resumed working on the site (after not touching it since 2017, ahaha), and will open it maybe a few months prior to demo release. Code needs quite a bit of cleaning up x_x

Speaking of cleaning up, I really need to upgrade CMD’s Ren’Py version… it’s on 7.0 and we’re like, what, on 7.2.1. I have to admit the game’s code is a mess, with a bunch of legacy code from old Ren’Py versions and workarounds. Maybe I’ll rework it from scratch after demo release – no that doesn’t mean I’m scrapping the whole project from the ground up, just the more, uh, technical aspects of it. 😉

Hey folks! It’s my birthday today, so I’m sharing some significant progress of Café Memoria Deux!

Click to view larger. Here’s a preview of an in-game demo scene, in its full glory with sprites and BGs! I’ve spent the past weeks copying the script to Ren’Py code, in particular the first in-game day. It’s mostly done, I just need to do a run-through making sure all the script is there, some debugging / improvements, and of course adding in the food artworks. Then I have to do the second day, as well as hangout days exclusive to Anna and Mikaela (and waiting on some title artworks, ahaha).

Also, Ryne’s sprite artwork has not been done yet and therefore will not be in the upcoming demo, as well as some rating stuff (that could change though). But nevertheless we’re inching closer towards a demo release! I’ll announce it once I feel confident about setting a definite date.

For those wondering, Mikaela and Jacob are not sister and brother! They kind of look like it, yeah, but they’re not related. Though, I’m sure Mikaela would dread having a brother like Jacob; saying he’ll piss her off on days end is an understatement.

Now, I’m going to take the rest of the day off and celebrate my birthday with family. Work will resume tomorrow! In the meantime, look forward to more significant progress in the coming months!

Let’s go to school

Hey folks! Hope you’re doing well. Let’s go visit the CMD world’s school.

Click to view larger. This is a (fictional California) high school where the characters go. While the game takes place in the summer and therefore most are in summer vacation, there are characters who are taking remedial summer classes due to poor marks in the regular semesters. Like Anna and Mikaela – their grades tend to be poor compared to the other three girls. There’s also some club activities during the summer as well, like the cooking club, and is visited in-game (I do have a cooking club BG planned but that’ll be done later).

Aurelia: There! Isn’t that easy?
Anna: Waaah, I-I’m so confused!
Mikaela: Stop going too fast, dammit! I guess Relia can’t relate to our struggles, Anna.

Yes, Aurelia is the perfect girl to study with! Especially during summer vacation 😉 Well, unless you’re Mikaela or Anna, you’ll only be more confused.

Aside from that, I’ve spent most of this month working on another small side project. No, not the lollipop VN, but something different. Depending on how things go, I -might- be able to release it sometime this year! A little hint on its content – no connections to my Memoria projects (or maybe so in subtle ways?), but it’s a romance VN that explores a problem one might face when looking for a relationship.

Of course, again I’m not neglecting CMD. I do have more sprites being worked on, namely Anna’s mother Elena, and one of the male sprites. I’m sure you ladies out there would like to see some of Café Memoria male characters =)

Belated Thanksgiving dinner in Mikaela’s room

Hey folks! Hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving last week (to those who celebrate it). As for me, spent most of my time at work – my job is one of those 24/7 establishments and therefore working holidays. I guess it kind of goes both ways, take a day off and spend time with family, or come to work and receive holiday pay. Eh, can’t really complain I guess (though my last several Thanksgivings were spent at work).

Anyway, let’s celebrate a belated Thanksgiving with new BG art! Let’s go inside Mikaela’s room, but remember that she doesn’t like it if you touch her stuff 😉 Click to view larger:

Decided to go for a green color scheme, as it’s her favorite color. 🙂 While she may not look like it, one of Mikaela’s hobbies include sewing and fashion, as shown here spools of thread and some other sewing materials. In fact, her sewing hobby plays a bit of a role in the story, her past, and her personality. I’m a little tempted to post here as to how she picked up the hobby, but I’ll leave it to you to find out when I release a demo. Lastly, of course, she uses this room to, uh, study – her grades are already bad enough that she needs some time to herself to concentrate!

As for character sprites, it’s been slow this month; my sprite artist is on hiatus for almost a month due to college. Hopefully she’ll return soon and we’ll see some Julia in the next post or two! On my end, as I wait for artworks I’m still in the tedious process of planning event CGs. It’s not that bad, only have to be mindful of the time of day, what the characters are wearing, backgrounds, and whatnot. We don’t want the girls inadvertently wearing swimsuits while working in the café, right? 😉

Anyway, happy belated Thanksgiving. Thanks for sticking around and following my projects, despite progress being slow. As cliche it may sound, it means lots to me, and keeps the project going! Hope you guys stick around long enough to see CMD’s completion.

Progress, Editing, and Birthday!

Good day everyone! Okay, I know you’re probably expecting new sprite artworks of Tristina (or Aurelia or Julia), but she’s still being worked on as of this post. I hope to post her sometime next month though! In the meantime, here’s a sample CMD screenshot:

Been working on the GUI a bit. It should be mostly the same from the previous Café Memoria, with a few new tweaks thanks to Ren’Py 6.99.11’s new GUI system (can’t wait for Ren’Py 7!). Of course, there are several things from CM1’s  GUI that could use a makeover and incorporate it into CMD. Like the Options / Preferences screen – looking back at that I think it could use a bit more effort.

How do the sprites look in the screenshot, btw? 🙂

Also, editing work is mostly complete. All that’s left now is to give it one more round of reading through and find anything needing refining. Also during that process determine what backgrounds I’ll need. Speaking of which, I’m in the process of gathering references for BGs, which… might take a while. Especially the ones involving interior design, not that great at it XD

Yeah, I know I posted this on my birthday today. But I just had to! ^.^ Not really fond of the thought of getting older, but ah well. Time to make the most of this day with friends and family, and of course progress~

Good day everyone, hope you’re all doing well! Me? Even though it’s nearing the end of September, it’s still pretty hot and humid. And here’s some new artwork of Mikaela. 🙂

So who’s next on the drawing board? Tristina?

While progress has been a little slow as of late, at least we’re taking a step at a time! Must admit it’s a little tough replying to progress from my editor. I have to read through the edited script (in a few batches of documents at a time), making sure stuff reads right and the tone of the story isn’t lost. And with each editing progress I receive, I need at least ~30min-1hr to read through them (just for one pass; I do multiple passes), and my surroundings as quiet as possible – yeah, stuff like barking dogs and leaf blowers break my concentration >.< Thankfully, it’s not that hard to find the right time to go over them.

Editing work is more than halfway done. When the script is done being edited, I’ll give it a full read through, and let my editor know of anything that’s missed, and whatnot.

Replying to art progress? That’s significantly easier, just go over the artworks with your eyes and see if anything didn’t turn out the way you want it to – doesn’t require intense concentration, I think. 😛

So… yeah. VN creation (or games in general) is a time consuming progress. I’m so tempted to rush things, but I remind myself – take your time, otherwise it’s not going to turn out the way I want it to be.

That should be it for this post. You know, it’s been a little over a year since I began working on Café Memoria Deux, when it was just a simple MS Word document with concepts. Now it’s slowly being fleshed out ^.^
