Creating Memoria Test 20

Hey folks! Café Memoria Deux is still progressing, albeit slowly. There has been a somewhat change of plans and the recruitment of a BG artist will be delayed a bit. Not going to say when I’ll have a post up regarding this, but I’ll give a heads up when it’s approaching. In fact, this month I’ve been focusing on getting the script edited some more. Yeah, they’ve gone through a first edit several months ago, but after another readthrough I felt that several sections could use some more work. Like, the girls’ routes for example. Should take at least a month to finish.

Also, no completed new character artworks just yet. I apologize for the slowness in this part of the project, but keep in mind my character / sprite artist has some RL issues to take care of, and that’s something beyond my control.

Again, I apologize for any slowness. Though good things do come to those who wait, right? 😉 To kind of make up for it, here’s some new CM(D) music I’ve composed in the meantime. It’s been a while since I’ve posted music here, maybe my compositions have improved since?

Though in the past, I’ve tried doing my own character artworks… and failed, as I don’t exactly have the patience to learn it – I kind of had the expectation to learn on my first attempts, ahaha.

Cafe Memoria Title Music

Cafe Memoria’s progressing nicely. And here’s something new I composed lately… title screen music!

Yeah, I have two versions. I consider v1 to be… kind of junk, but it’s there if you’re curious to listen. V2 is the recent version (obviously), but it still needs work.

Parts of it sound like a wedding scene music, no? With all the stringed instruments and tubular bells, well yeah. I was aiming for a “classy cafe” feel. I can pretty much imagine the Memoria girls wearing maid outfits with this theme, although I really like them to wear… something like a 50s diner clothes.

No artworks of the costumes yet, we’ll see how it turns out.

After composing this music, I really want to create an OP theme. Yes, I’m seriously planning on having an OP video for this project (saw somewhere that someone can create one…).

Secret project music

…or more like musical revisions. 😛 But they’ll be used in the secret project alright.

Here’s a revision of Memoria Test 7, v4. Changes include:

  • Added a short intro
  • Higher quality samples (drums, piano)
  • More tubular bells!
  • Changed drum patterns in certain parts


Wow, I have multiple revisions of this music. I have to admit that this is one of my favorite tunes I composed, being very cheerful.

Regarding the secret project, no details about it until sometime in February, when I have a significant portion of it done (I hope). Well, I’ll let out one detail, it has to do something with food. 🙂

Happy birthday to Aurelia today! To celebrate, I’ve got a couple new things!

Aurelia’s character design is quite interesting; she gets excellent grades at school, yet she can be a little dense in conversations and is quite flirty. The pantyhose she wears with her school uniform, in a way, accentuates her personality. It gives her an air of a professional, mature, young woman, yet, makes her quite seductive.

…Yeah. I think Hyanna drew hot legs. Very hot legs in pantyhose. *nosebleeds*

And finally, the last of the girls’ v2 theme music! Aurelia’s theme music v2 and v2.1:

  • Changes from v1 to v2:
    • Changed background french horn to strings
    • Changed bass to a fretless bass
    • Better reverb effects (subtle)
    • Changed drum kits
  • Changes from v2 to v2.1
    • High-quality samples for drums and piano
    • Guitar line changed to piano
    • Am I missing something…?

Since getting a new computer recently, I’ve migrated to a newer version of Reason using new devices as well as finding higher-quality sound samples. So it’s possible that there will be v3 of character theme music, as well as the other music. Aurelia’s theme music is the first to get these new things in her music (in v2.1) 🙂

Anna’s cute theme music

Anna in her casual outfit

It took a little over half a year to post this, but here’s Anna’s version 2 theme music!

  • Added a delay line effect to the piano. Most noticeable 0:28-0:41
  • Added a reverb effect to bass and drums
  • Worked more on the glockenspiel, i.e. added more notes
  • Worked on the piano line some, to make it more interesting. Especially after 0:28
  • Changed volume level on piano slightly
  • Minor change of some notes of other instruments


Lots of stuff about Anna is so cute. From her personality, looks, outfit, and even her theme music. I need to get someone to do a voice sample of her; I imagine it being soft. Anna is the epitome of cute ^.^

Well, I have to admit, Anna seems to be growing on me quite a bit in the story…

Memoria in F# minor

I present to you a new piece of music, written from scratch. 🙂

Normally, when writing music I don’t really pay attention to the major/minor aspect. But for this piece of music I made sure that it was written in minor, to get that “sad feeling.” Taking music theory classes in college helps (although I didn’t major in music).

I can imagine a scene with this playing – perhaps near the end of Julia’s route, when Mikaela… okay, I don’t want to spoil anything! I can tell you that Mikaela… is usually motivated through her emotions.

One more thing: I’ve been having computer issues lately (random reboots, which progressively got worse), so if it dies on me then I’m going on hiatus until it gets fixed! Of course I frequently back up project files just in case. Maybe I should get my sis to back up her artworks for the project…

Otherwise, enjoy! I might have something special for next post, that is, if my comp doesn’t die. (sorry, Anna and Aurelia’s v2 theme music are gonna have to wait for a bit, though!)

Julia ver 2.0 music

Julia in her casual outfit

Here’s version 2 of Julia’s theme music! Changes include:

  • Made the piano more, say, ethereal. This was achieved by combining two instruments.
  • Minor changes to the bass. Added subtle emphasis on certain notes (through automation).
  • Swapped the flute’s reverb FX for a delay line; I feel that this will add more substance.
  • Some volume automation done on the flute line.
  • Minor changes to reverb. You most likely won’t notice it though, but I did change it.


If there’s one thing I need work on, it’s the mastering. For most of the music I do I try to adjust the compressor and equalizer so that the music sounds “good enough.” But listening to music of other VNs, my music sounds quite… amateur-ish. For some reason I can’t find that “sweet spot” in terms of finding the right equalizer and compressor levels.

During my time in college I took a class that uses Reason in conjunction with Pro Tools, with using the latter for audio mastering. As of right now I’m stuck with using Reason’s mastering tools, and we never went in depth with mastering using Reason. Oh well make do with what you have.

Memoria: I Don’t Have Enough of Mikaela

I finished “Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai NEXT” (aka Haganai NEXT) recently, and liked it. Not as good as the first season IMO, but it’s still good. So another Memoria x Haganai crossover post!

This time, I’ve decided to do Mikaela as Sena. The process is the same deal with Julia as Yozora. Took screenshots of Sena from the OP sequence, stitched them together, traced and colored, and added Mikaela’s face and hairstyle. Note that these are from the first season’s OP, you won’t find em in the OP of NEXT (just in case you haven’t watched Haganai).

Again, I’m borrowing my sister’s tablet, so my drawing and coloring is very rough. Kashiwazaki Mikaela, lol. Mikaela and Sena are quite similar in a way in terms of personality (as well as both being blonde and such XD).

And… I have one more present for you guys. I’ve created my own rendition of Haganai NEXT’s ED music, “Bokura no Tsubasa.” One of the most beautiful ED themes IMO; search on youtube if you wanna listen to the original. Yes, an art post and a music post. 🙂

Let’s do comedy music

Reason 4 - Creating Memoria Test 18

I finally somehow got to creating comedy/funny music for Memoria! Also, a glimpse of the interface I used to create this piece.

Essentially, this is a remix of Memoria Test 5, with a faster tempo (the fastest out of all music I’ve created so far), new instrumentation and quite a bit of new notation. I have to admit, though, I was feeling pretty lazy to create this from scratch since I used Test 5 as a template.

BTW, April 1 is coming up, meaning April Fools’ day. Don’t let yourselves fall to pranks. 😛

Here’s Tristina’s theme, with major improvements!

According to a commenter, one of the problems of this piece of music was that it lacked punch. So I tweaked the Drum FX machine and increased the volume of the low frequency. I also tweaked the audio compressor. I don’t know about you guys, but those edits sure made the beat visualizer on my Winamp more lively 🙂

Here’s a list of more changes:

  • Added synth piano line
  • Flam effects on drums
  • Changed the notation somewhat (noticeable in the intro)
  • Added more substance to the main guitar line
  • Changed drum pattern a bit
  • Added pitch bending to guitar (0:28 and 1:17)

I said it once, I’ll say it again; creating rock-ish type music is not my thing. I’ve only created it not only for the sake of the project, but to reflect her tough and tomboyish personality.
