Julia in July… not really

Hey folks! Hope you’re all staying cool this summer (or at least to those living in the northern hemisphere!). Here’s what I’m up to lately with CMD:

Just playing around with the GUI, and testing out Tristina and Aurelia’s sprites. Let me know how it looks, I’d like feedback if anything can be improved! In regards to coding, I’m having this weird issue with side images – here’s a snippet of Ren’py code:

“t” is Tristina’s character; “u” is Aurelia. When line 4 transitions to line 7, Tristina’s side image transitions out with a dissolve, even though I have no exit transition defined for side images. Here’s the weird part – uncomment line 5, and it’ll work as intended, Tristina’s side image disappears with no transition. I’ve been banging my head against the wall for hours the other night. I did try upgrading my Ren’Py but it didn’t help. Sounds confusing? Don’t worry about it 😉

There’s a chance I’ll be doing some recruiting next month. I’ve been spending the last month planning it somewhat extensively (okay, maybe the past several months). Part of the reason I’ve been holding it off for a while is that it can eat up a fairly large part of my budget. I had to prune parts of the project without breaking the story. I’m deciding, will this work out without so-and-so? Can it be substituted with this and still work out? I’ve been feeling a little hesitant as there’s quite a bit of risk to it and requires extensive planning – but hey the project has to progress eventually, gotta take the risk.

Lastly, Julia’s sprite is currently in the works. I know this post isn’t really about her, but I just had to give it a title relating to July and Julia, since they look and sound similar in a way. Her birthday isn’t in July, though; it’s in February 😉

Sooo, yeah. This month’s been pretty hectic, both project-wise, and at work. Look forward to the next post!

It took several months, but Aurelia’s sprite artwork is finally done!

Click to view larger. What do you guys think of her? How about in her swimsuit? 😉 It’s practically summer here and it’s getting hot. So hot that Aurelia wants to cool off with you under the umbrella at the beach. Who doesn’t want to hang out with such an attractive, yet airheaded, girl at the beach? Most guys at her school would want to. Be aware that she can get a little, uh, crazy. 😉

Sprite artwork aside, I’ve been doing some more BG art planning. Gotta admit this process is more complex than planning sprite art. I mean, there’s quite a bit of exterior / interior design involved. How should the area look like? What objects are involved? I imagine it being very difficult for a BG artist if they’re given just descriptions but no picture references. So my references are mostly just to give an idea of what an area should look like, and the objects within, as opposed to just copying it exactly. I think the process applies similarly to sprite art – designing the waitress uniforms involved Google image searches and mixing and matching elements from various waitress outfits, as well as the other outfits. It’s interesting designing your own outfits, and thinking about the design of the characters’ rooms ^.^

An update on that, uh, lollipop-themed small VN – didn’t really work much on it since I’m focusing on getting sprite art done, planning BG art, GUI, and organizing the CMD project folder, as well as planning out event CGs. But I’ll give updates on it once significant progress has been made.

I realized that it’s been two years since I’ve released the first Café Memoria. We’ve come a long way, right?

Still Alive, and Happy Café Memoria Day

Hey folks! Good news – I received a message from my artist that she’s doing well and back to work, after a month’s hiatus. You might also have heard about this on my twitter as well. Not only that, but thank goodness for having recovered.

BTW, I’ve been kind of working on a smaller VN project the past month, largely because of last month’s artist hiatus, and in anticipation of CMD being stalled for several months. But now that my artist is back I’ll continue working on CMD. Though, I’m considering continuing working on the smaller VN at the same time. It’s been almost two years since I’ve released a new VN (since the first CM), and I’d like to get a refresher in releasing another – CMD is a pretty big VN and of course is taking a while!

That “secret project” has connections with Café Memoria. More details next month if I decide to take it up as a small summer project. Oh, this tweet is a hint of its content:

Lastly, to those who live in the US, have a great, uh, Café Memoria day. Thank your waitstaff in restaurants for providing great customer service. And thank them for being able to deal with unruly customers in a calm, professional manner.

But on a more serious note, Happy Memorial day. Do remember and thank those veterans for their service!

For the Love of the Project

February is the month of love. While I’m not exactly fond of Valentine’s, I did try to make the best of it on that day; I hope you guys did as well, regardless if you have a significant other or not. Anyway, let’s show some love for Café Memoria Deux by showing some progress!

Yeah, it might not look like much, I’ve been pretty busy working on CMD’s GUI. The main menu screen looks good, I think. There’s also other screens I’m working on, namely the Extras and Options screens, which is taking quite a bit of work; might show in next post. The GUI is looking so far to be huge overhaul from the first Café Memoria, right? 🙂

Lastly, I’m preparing for BG artist recruitment, *hopefully* posting about it around next month! Excuse the delays in that, because something (related to BGs) came up unexpectedly at the beginning of the year – kind of waited on it and stuff never really materialized. So yeah, no more waiting on that, I’ve already dealt with enough setbacks; don’t need any more delays.

I’m hoping that, as well as more sprite artworks in the coming month. Stay tuned!

New Year, New Artworks

Hey guys, hope your New Year is going well. For me? It’s alright, a little slow and lots of rain lately. In fact said rains make driving to work all the more treacherous – all those flooding and mudslides x_x

And… this might have taken several months, but Tristina’s sprite art is now complete! 🙂

Click to view larger. What do you guys think of her? Especially Mahou Shoujo Tristina, aka her cosplay for the in-game anime Magica Memoria? She’s dressed up as the character Shizuka, the main character of the anime. You know, I should commission some artworks of Shizuka, and make some posters of her for the in-game “advertisements” for background art. I have a bit of an idea how she’ll look like – while she does wear the costume Tristina is wearing, maybe she’s a fairly short girl, short black hair, shy and quiet? I haven’t really gotten around to her design much, but she and Tristina have a bit in common.

Who’s next on the list? There’s Aurelia + Julia remaining, and three more characters.

As for background art, something came up and my recruiting post will be delayed a bit. I apologize! And I have to apologize for the slowness in art progress once again. Well, I guess games do take time to work on and finish.

As far as progress goes, yeah, Tristina’s still not finished, but I can say significant progress has been made on her, so I’m hoping to post her next month. Yeah, I apologize for delays in her artwork but my artist has been so busy with stuff like college.

So, what are the plans for CMD next year? Some pretty big plans.

  1. Finish sprite artwork. I’m hoping my artist can get Tristina finished soon! Also hoping to have some title artwork and/or event CGs done before demo release.
  2. Hire background artist. If all goes well with planning, then I’ll make a recruitment thread hopefully in the next month.
  3. Work on GUI some more.
  4. Work on website. Will largely depend how long 1 and 2 will take.
  5. Release demo halfway through the year. Again, will depend how long 1 and 2 will take.
  6. (Surprise?) – It’s too early to say, but I’m really considering it.

Yeah, this project is taking quite a while to work on, compared to the first Café Memoria. It just contains a bit more content so you’ll enjoy it when it’s finally released. 🙂 I do get a little worn out working on it, trying to balance my work schedule and this project, as well as dealing with setbacks. But I remind myself to be persistent and not giving up. I see quite a bit of ambitious VN projects and that’s one reason to remind myself I can do it.

But the most important motivator are my supporters and the people who are helping / have helped me with this project. I can’t stress this enough, but thanks so much for following me and my projects. And again, even if progress is slow.

Progress, Editing, and Birthday!

Good day everyone! Okay, I know you’re probably expecting new sprite artworks of Tristina (or Aurelia or Julia), but she’s still being worked on as of this post. I hope to post her sometime next month though! In the meantime, here’s a sample CMD screenshot:

Been working on the GUI a bit. It should be mostly the same from the previous Café Memoria, with a few new tweaks thanks to Ren’Py 6.99.11’s new GUI system (can’t wait for Ren’Py 7!). Of course, there are several things from CM1’s  GUI that could use a makeover and incorporate it into CMD. Like the Options / Preferences screen – looking back at that I think it could use a bit more effort.

How do the sprites look in the screenshot, btw? 🙂

Also, editing work is mostly complete. All that’s left now is to give it one more round of reading through and find anything needing refining. Also during that process determine what backgrounds I’ll need. Speaking of which, I’m in the process of gathering references for BGs, which… might take a while. Especially the ones involving interior design, not that great at it XD

Yeah, I know I posted this on my birthday today. But I just had to! ^.^ Not really fond of the thought of getting older, but ah well. Time to make the most of this day with friends and family, and of course progress~

Good day everyone, hope you’re all doing well! Me? Even though it’s nearing the end of September, it’s still pretty hot and humid. And here’s some new artwork of Mikaela. 🙂

So who’s next on the drawing board? Tristina?

While progress has been a little slow as of late, at least we’re taking a step at a time! Must admit it’s a little tough replying to progress from my editor. I have to read through the edited script (in a few batches of documents at a time), making sure stuff reads right and the tone of the story isn’t lost. And with each editing progress I receive, I need at least ~30min-1hr to read through them (just for one pass; I do multiple passes), and my surroundings as quiet as possible – yeah, stuff like barking dogs and leaf blowers break my concentration >.< Thankfully, it’s not that hard to find the right time to go over them.

Editing work is more than halfway done. When the script is done being edited, I’ll give it a full read through, and let my editor know of anything that’s missed, and whatnot.

Replying to art progress? That’s significantly easier, just go over the artworks with your eyes and see if anything didn’t turn out the way you want it to – doesn’t require intense concentration, I think. 😛

So… yeah. VN creation (or games in general) is a time consuming progress. I’m so tempted to rush things, but I remind myself – take your time, otherwise it’s not going to turn out the way I want it to be.

That should be it for this post. You know, it’s been a little over a year since I began working on Café Memoria Deux, when it was just a simple MS Word document with concepts. Now it’s slowly being fleshed out ^.^

And, let’s not neglect the story! It’s currently being looked over by my editor, with several documents already edited. Pretty interesting how I read over the script before sending it to be edited, and it looked fine to me. But reading my editor’s comments opened my eyes on how the script can be improved. Ahaha, I must admit, English wasn’t my strongest subject during my school years. But yeah, I’ve learned quite a bit from my editor.

With sprite artworks and editing work being done, perhaps it’s time to consider background artworks for the game. I’ve already started planning which BGs I need, maybe something in the style of the original Café Memoria. Oh, the GUI needs some planning, too.

CMD – Artist Recruitment

2016/07/09 – Closed! I’ve chosen my artist. Thanks to those who applied!

This is a bit of an emergency post, as I had to let go of my artist a few days ago. It’s unfortunate, as I’d like to keep Ezri, who worked on CM1. But issues popped up and she will be unable to work on CMD. Therefore I’m recruiting a new artist!

Some overview of the project

  • 2015/10/26
  • 2016/02/23 – yeah I know that post is for the critique, but parts of it still apply here

What I need

  • 9 full-body sprites, 6 female, 3 male (see below for characters)
  • Each character has one pose, with varying amounts of expressions and outfits
  • Anime style, looking for something like Love Live! / Idolm@ster style and proportions (see below)
  • Sprites need to be as large as possible to allow room for resizing
  • Finished sprites should be a PSD and layered to allow mix and matching of outfits and expressions
  • Motivation!

I’m looking for something of a mix between Love Live! and Idolm@ster or similar. For the eyes especially would like it to be in the style of the former.

Budget

Around $650-$800. Would like to pay $30 for base pose per character and comes with 1 outfit and 1 expression free, with additional outfits +$5, and additional expressions +$2. Prefer to pay as sprites get completed, via paypal. Negotiable as long as it’s within budget. While I don’t need event CGs as of now, there will likely be opportunities to do them as the project progresses.
